CAMPAIGNERS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT POLICE OPERATION

The Campaign to Close Campsfield is likely to initiate complaints concerning the police operation at last Saturday's "Ten Years Too Long" demonstration at the detention centre near Kidlington.

They will allege that the police operation was "over-policing" and a violation of democratic rights and the right to freedom of expression.

They are likely also to assert that alleged concern for the human rights of detainees inside the detention centre-apparently, according to the police, raised by private company Group 4 who run the detention centre for the Home Office, who told the police that some detainees were likely to be intimidated by the demonstration-was not credible.

Campaign spokesperson Bill MacKeith said: "There have been over 100 demonstrations at Campsfield. They have taken a predictable form, as we reminded the police beforehand. We also provided information that detainees in Campsfield welcomed the monthly demonstrations as a show of support for them in their isolated and vulnerable position. We shall be asking for an explanation as to why there was a change of policy on this occasion.

"The police alleged that there was "intelligence" that justified this change. We asked what it was, and were not given an explanation."

"I hope that the campaign meeting on Tuesday will pursue complaints through our elected local representatives and by all possible means. "

"It is not good for people in Oxfordshire, including detainees in Campsfield, that overpolicing should bear down on us in this way. We informed the police about our information about who was coming, what their intentions were, and what we wanted to do. They appear not to have listened."

"We are not a tin pot group, nor are we terrorists. We represent the democratic opinion of trade union, political and other movements in the county and in the country at large."
